Fire crews were called to Stowmarket High School this afternoon to deal with a spillage of unknown chemicals.

A crew from Stowmarket and two from Ipswich were called to the Gainsborough Road school just before 3pm and the spill which was contained on site.

Suffolk Fire Service's area commander for emergency response Ian Bowell said:" It was identified as the school was closing, or soon afterwards, so there are no children or staff on site.

"It's a small spillage of unkown chemicals which has been contained. We're not sure how it came to be spilled, but it's possibly the result of vandalism."

He said the chemicals were showing 'no obvious signs of reaction' and, shortly after 5pm the fire service were preparing to hand the site over to the school authorities.
