Bury St Edmunds Hidden Gardens open for public viewing today

Nearly 30 houses in Bury St Edmunds will open their stunning gardens for public viewing as a popular event returns for another year.

The Hidden Gardens of Bury, an annual fundraising event in support of St Nicholas Hospice Care, which helps people living with dying, death and grief, will start from 11.30am, finishing at 5pm today.

The event, sponsored by Ashtons Legal and Bedfords Estate Agents, will offer visitors a rare opportunity to explore Bury’s hidden gardens nestled within the town centre.

An additional four gardens will be open along Westley Road, a short walk from Bury’s centre.

The event aims to showcase the diverse and unseen horticultural treasure hiding behind walls, fences and gates, offering the public a chance to discover secret patios, immaculate lawns, vibrant borders as well as vegetable gardens and greenhouses.

George Chilvers, the hospice’s community fundraising manager, said: “We are thrilled to bring back Hidden Gardens of Bury for another year and I’d like to thank all of those who make the occasion possible, our sponsors, volunteers and garden hosts.

“The Hidden Gardens of Bury is a fantastic opportunity for both locals and visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of our town’s hidden horticultural havens, all while supporting the hospice.

“All of our garden hosts have been working incredibly hard to make sure their gardens are looking their best, and we are so grateful for their efforts.

The gardens are within a walking distance of each other. The events programme includes a map, which can also be downloaded via the Hidden Gardens app.

Tickets can be purchased from 10.30am at the St Nicholas gazebo on Angel Hill, where there will also be a chance to buy plants from Woolpit Nurseries. Proceeds will go towards the charity.

Under 16s go in for free. All other tickets will cost £7.

Refreshments will be provided by some hosts.
