Bardwell and Elveden events attract eye-catching vehicles, hundreds of visitors and a vintage aircraft

Gleaming classic and sports cars were the main attractions at car shows in Bardwell and Elveden on Sunday.

In Bardwell, the eye-catching land-based vehicles were given stiff competition by an airborne craft, when visitors to Cars on the Green were treated to a flypast by a vintage Dakota aeroplane.

The seventh Cars on the Green hosted about 185 vehicles, with the day also giving organisations in the village the chance to fund-raise and showcase their activities.

David Ruffles, chairman of the organising committee, said: “It was just phenomenal – we couldn’t believe the number of people who turned up. It went into the thousands.”

Tractor rides around the village also ran ‘non-stop’.

In Elveden, more than 200 cars registered for the fifth Classic and Vintage Car Show in the walled gardens of the Elveden Estate, which were opened by Lord and Lady Iveagh for the annual event.

The day was organised by the West Suffolk branch of the NSPCC and Bury St Edmunds Abbey Rotary Club – with proceeds split between the two.

Ed Walsh, of Abbey Rotary, said: “It was very successful. The car parks were full by 11am.”

The total raised is still being calculated, but the gate was up 20 per cent on last year.
