Bury St Edmunds to get its own monthly farmers’ market

Genuine local and small-scale food producers will be able to sell their goods at a monthly farmers’ market in Bury St Edmunds from next year.

Up to 30 stalls will feature in the Bury Farmers’ Market which will take place in The Traverse on the second Sunday of every month, starting in March 2017.

It will be run by Justine Paul, owner of Suffolk Market Events, who already runs a number of events in the region, including the award-winning Lavenham Farmers’ Market.

“Every year I bring a farmers’ market to the Bury Food Festival, to Harvest Festival and to the Christmas Street Fayre and for years the local people have been asking why this can’t happen every month, well now it can,” said Justine.

She added: “I am delighted that this is now going to happen. Bury has always best demonstrated the finest traditions of an authentic market town, boasting a regular weekly market, the fantastic retail and restaurant offering and now we have another reason for visitors to come to Bury on a Sunday.”

A destination management plan for Bury, commissioned by St Edmundsbury Borough Council, concluded that a farmers’ market would be a big asset to the town and is credited with fuelling ongoing discussions between Suffolk Market Events and the council.

Mark Cordell, chief executive of Ourburystedmunds, said the ‘high standard’ market would become yet another reason for people to visit Bury.

Shoppers will have the chance to meet some of the producers involved at an ‘introductory’ market in The Traverse on December 11.
