Bury St Edmunds is named in top 50 places to live in Britain

Bury St Edmunds is one of the 50 finest places to live in the country according to the Sunday Times.

The list puts Bury in the same company as Primrose Hill in London, Leamington Spa and fellow Suffolk town, Aldeburgh.

Cllr Sarah Stamp, cabinet member for leisure, culture and heritage at St Edmundsbury Borough Council, is among those delighted but not at all surprised by the news.

She said: “We have a vibrant town centre as well as having a good quality of life partnered with a strong heritage.”

Cllr Stamp feels the national coverage will also assist with the town’s ongoing development as a tourist hot spot and it shows the continual improvements which have been done for the town.

Mark Cordell, chief executive of BID, said the joint efforts by the councils and his organisation had started to help the town prosper:

“There isn’t a secret to our success, just all the key players are singing from the same hymn sheet and have given the town a feel good factor and a positive community spirit which gives people pride in Bury.”

Chris Thorogood, of estate agents William H Brown, feels that Bury’s slower pace of life attracts house buyers from all over the country.

He said:“People from further afield love the uniqueness, with our period listed buildings it is easy to see why it is popular and with increased exposure that can only be a good thing for our town.”
