Thousands of people flocked to the Abbey Gardens, in Bury St Edmunds, on Saturday to take part in the town’s annual bonfire night celebrations.

Bury Round Table, which organised the event, is expecting to have set a new record this year, raising around £12,000 for Bury-based charities and good causes.

“Last year was a record year and it looks like we’re substantially up on that,” said the group’s treasurer Robin Cutler who estimates that around 6,000 people turned up on the night.

Bury stage choir The Voice Squad helped entertain the crowds, with fun fair rides and refreshments adding to families’ enjoyment ahead of the £10,000 fireworks spectacular, which lasted a whopping 25 minutes.

The start of the display was delayed slightly to allow those buying tickets on the door time to enter and organisers have stressed the need for more people to buy in advance next year.

Mr Cutler said: “The crowd we had this year, we’ve never had one like it. It was absolutely enormous!

“I think we must have got close to capacity because it was very busy.”

Bury Round Table is asking any charities or good causes who could benefit from some of the money raised to submit a formal request for consideration. Email chairman@buryroundtable.co.uk
