Bury St Edmunds councillor quits after investigation launched over social media posts

A Bury St Edmunds councillor under investigation following complaints about his social media posts has resigned.

Frank Warby, who represented Moreton Hall as a Conservative councillor, was the subject of an investigation by West Suffolk Council and was suspended from the Conservative Group.

It followed complaints over posts he shared on Facebook in relation the latest controversies over race and inequality after the death of George Floyd in the US.

Mr Warby said he resigned this morning after 21 years as a councillor.

He has also resigned from the Conservative Party.

"Hopefully it will bring closure and myself and my family can just relax and enjoy my retirement.

"I'm 79 and enough is enough.

"I would like to say a word of thanks to everyone who has supported me over the 21 years.

"I'm still available for anyone on the estate who wants any kind of help."

Mr Warby was mayor for Bury St Edmunds Town Council in 2003 and St Edmundsbury Borough Council in 2006 to 2007.

He was also a cabinet member for the borough council and was a county councillor for four years.

Mr Warby added: "I can have more time with my family, grandchildren and great grandchildren."

West Suffolk Council was approached for comment.
