Bury Society publishes review of recent activities in town
A charity dedicated to preserving the unique heritage of Bury St Edmunds has published a review of recent activities.
The Bury Society’s publication, Society Review, provides updates on its work over the late summer and autumn months as well as efforts by other groups.
The Bury Water Meadows Group, Bury in Bloom, the Magna Carta celebrations, Guildhall and some planning applications are among the featured groups, events and issues.
Karen Hurden, chairman of the Bury Society, said: “It’s a cultural mix, very informative and interesting. Our members seem to like it very much so we’re very proud of it.”
The review, which is published three times a year and edited by society member Richard Carter, also looks at life in Bury at the outbreak of the First World War.
The Bury Society was formed more than 40 years ago to save St John’s Street from being torn down and redeveloped. When they succeeded, they carried on their work to protect the town’s beauty and heritage as it grows and prospers.
Mrs Hurden said: “It’s really about caring for Bury St Edmunds. It doesn’t mean to say we want to keep it in the past. “
The Society has a packed programme of events already lined up for next year including a A Summer’s Evening Concert, day trips to Kenwood House and Holkham Hall as well as talks by BBC Radio Suffolk presenter Mark Murphy and tour guide Martyn Taylor.
