Bury Free Press Community Awards returning sponsor, Ellisons, talks about the need to champion ‘good deeds’

A returning sponsor from last year’s Bury Free Press Community Awards hopes that good deeds in and around the area can once again be well and truly recognised.

The awards, brought to you by the Bury Free Press in association with Bury St Edmunds Town Council, are giving residents the chance to nominate for those they think have contributed to improving the town in some way over the past year.

After first sponsoring the ‘Good Deeds’ category last year, Ellisons Solicitors has returned and Sohan Sidhu, partner and head of immigration, explained why they wanted to be a part of the awards again.

He said: “Our values are embedded in everything we do, and playing an active and supportive role in the communities within which we work is something that has always been important to us and is part of our core values.

“As a firm, we have a very long history and association with Bury St Edmunds and the awards showcase the fantastic sense of community the town has and the wonderful people who make it the place it is.”

At the 2022 awards ceremony at the town’s Guildhall in November, the Good Deed award went to Jemma Noakes.

She was described by those that nominated her as ‘a young lady who has been on a one-woman mission to clean up Marham Park, Mildenhall and the Howard Estates’.

The Good Deed category joins Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Best Event by a Community Group, Everybody Needs Good Neighbours, Eco-Friendly, Best Community Group and Lifetime Achievement, as well as our new ones – Community Food Hero and Charity of the Year.

On why Ellisons appreciate their category as well as all the awards, Mr Sidhu said: “The Good Deed category is awarded to a person or group who has shown unique commitment to keeping the town looking good.

“It’s great to be able to support this category to give the recognition to someone who is going above and beyond to look after the community and its surroundings.

To pay tribute to the local heroes who have made some extraordinary contributions is truly something special and sets a good example for everyone within the community, to feel and become part of it.

“Having such role models can provide impetus for others to follow in their steps.”

Asked what his would say to voters who have seen good deeds being being done in their area, Mr Sidhu said: “Give your local heroes the recognition they deserve by nominating them for this award and championing them for their achievements.”
