Berkeley Squares singer famed for ‘fabulous’ shows dies aged 77
A Bury St Edmunds performer who formed a renowned music hall group has died aged 77.
Mary Alexander was a singer in the four piece Berkeley Squares who had a big following in Suffolk in the 1970s and 80s and had a comeback in the mid-90s.
The group, which also included Gloria Stewart, Joyce Frost and Bryan Thurlow, performed around the county from the Theatre Royal, in Bury to the Quay Theatre, in Sudbury and care homes.
Her daughter Lucy McCarthy, 46, of Drinkstone, said: “They were quite well known for making all their costumes - they would change costume for every song.
“They always put on a fabulous show.”
Mrs Alexander leaves four children and six grandchildren. Her funeral is on April 16 at West Suffolk Crematorium at noon.
