Barrow has celebrated the official opening of its new community centre in the former village school which has been lovingly refurbished.

After a project which spanned six years and cost more than £60,000 to complete, the previously redundant Grade II listed Town Estate Room has been transformed to serve as a meeting place for villagers and groups.

Residents gathered on Saturday to witness the Bishop of Dunwich, The Rt Rev Dr Mike Harrison formally open the refurbished building, in the heart of the village, and dedicate it for community use.

The Rev Dr Barbara Sherlock, trustee of the Barrow Town Estate Room Charity and chairman of the Town Estate Room Management Committee, said: “This has been a long time coming and we are so grateful to all the local residents that supported our fund-raising, and the local organisations that have helped us get to this stage.

“The aim is that this will become somewhere where young people, the elderly and families can all drop in and socialise.”

To mark the occasion, the village hosted a number of events including afternoon tea, a teddy bear parachute jump off All Saints Church and a two-day open gardens event which saw 15 homes open their gates to the public, some selling plants and paintings.
