A Bury St Edmunds bakery has been named as ‘one of the best’ in the country by a national newspaper.
Wooster’s Bakery, based in Langton Place, Bury St Edmunds and Bardwell, is one of three in Suffolk which made the list of 49 best bakeries in the UK, compiled by The Times newspaper.
The list was was drawn up by chefs and bakers local to each region.
Joanna Brennan, co-founder of Pump Street Bakery, Woodbridge, compiled the list for Suffolk.
She selected:
Wooster's Bakery, Bury St Edmunds and Bardwell
Headed up by Will Wooster, Wooster’s Bakery has a family tradition of innovation. Established in 1992 by Sue and Simon Wooster, the bakery at Bardwell Windmill, Suffolk was hand making quirky breads before ‘artisan’ was reinvented.
The bakery has continued to grow in both quality and reputation.
It also supplies a selection of restaurants, cafes, farm shops and specialist retailers.
The Penny Bun Bakehouse, Lowestoft
Johnny Spillings started The Penny Bun Bakehouse after training as a chef in top Michelin star restaurants across the country.
His 12 years training included working for Peter Gorton at the Horn of Plenty in Devon, the celebrated Roux Brothers at The Waterside Inn in Bray and at Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck.
But it was whilst working at Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons under world-renowned Chef Patissier Benoit Blin that Johnny discovered his love for baking.
Inspired by French techniques and with a passion for real bread, Johnny moved back home to Suffolk to open the bakery, crafting baked goods for the local area.
