Bury St Edmunds town centre plans for Cornish Bakery shop at former Palmers

A national Cornish bakery chain is set to open a shop in Bury St Edmunds at the site of a former department store.

The Cornish Bakery Ltd has gained permission to make changes to the remaining empty unit at the former Palmers building, in Buttermarket.

It sought planning and listed building consent from West Suffolk Council for two hanging signs, redecoration of the shop front as well as an air conditioning system and freezers connected to roof-mounted condenser units.

The Cornish Bakery, which has shops across the country including in Southwold, will sell drinks, breakfast, lunch, cakes and pasties.

There would be seating inside for customers who wish to dine in.

Menswear retailer Brook Taverner opened last week at the other unit at the converted building.

The former Palmers was transformed into two ground floor shops and eight apartments on the first, second and third floors.

The site had stood empty since Palmers closed in January 2018 having traded there since 1961.
