Community heroes from Thetford and East Harling were commended at an awards ceremony for Breckland’s most selfless residents last Friday.

The Pride in Breckland Awards, organised by Breckland Council, are designed to recognise those who go above and beyond to help others in their communities.

Around 150 people, including all 27 finalists, attended the glittering event in Watton where the nine winners were announced.

Cllr Michael Wassell, district council leader, said: “I’m delighted so many people were able to join us to celebrate some of the tremendous examples of residents and businesses from Breckland.

“It is such a unique and wonderful place to live, work and visit thanks to the remarkable contributions our winners have made to their local communities.

“Our winners and finalists give us all so many reasons to take ‘pride in Breckland’.”

Winner of the Outstanding Comtribution to Sport award was Melanie Floyd, from Thetford.

The keen athlete, who has recently completed her 100th marathon, set up the Thetford Park Run to encourage people to exercise and still shares her enthusiasm with its participants each week.

Eleanor Doyle, from East Harling, was presented with the Good Friend/Neighbour award.

As well as acting as carer for her husband, Eleanor was commended for her dedication to her neighbours, cooking for families in need and helping with transport to hospital appointments.
