Arrested man bailed after break-in at Bury St Edmunds school

A man arrested following a break-in at a Bury St Edmunds school which resulted in a police chase on the A14 has been bailed.

Police were called at 12.10am yesterday (July 17) to reports of smashing glass at King Edward VI School, in Grove Road, and on arrival saw a vehicle leaving the scene.

They pursued the vehicle on the A14 before it left the carriageway at Risby and collided with street furniture.

A 33-year-old man from London was arrested in the car park of Claas UK at 12.30am on suspicion of burglary and was taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre.

He has been released on bail until August 1.

Police are continuing their hunt for another person in connection with the incident.

A Suffolk Police spokesman said the kitchen area of the school was broken into and entry was forced into an office area.

Cash and items of food and drink were stolen.

The estimated cost of the damage caused to the school was £650.

In a statement on its website, the school said: "We are pleased to report that the scenes of crime officers have finished their investigatory work and that we can now access the school’s kitchen.

"The catering team have committed to clearing, cleaning and sorting their workspace in time to resume their normal and full catering service from tomorrow morning (July 18).

"We are hugely grateful to them for their efforts, and feel lucky to have such resilient and resourceful colleagues.

"Our students have been mature and helpful over the course of a logistically tricky day, and we thank them for their forbearance."
