20 fire crews fight two large crop fires
More than 20 fire appliances have been in action this afternoon at two simultaneous crop fires on opposite sides of Bury St Edmunds.
Suffolk Fire Service was called to what was initially reported as six to eight acres of standing crop on fire at Hinderclay Hall, off the A143, at about 2.15pm, but the blaze quickly spread to 60 acres.
At its height there were 14 fire appliances on site, including six from Norfolk, plus control vehicles and Suffolk's all-terrain Unimog fire truck.
A Suffolk fire spokesman said at about 4.30pm that the fire had been surrounded and they were starting to withdraw the Norfolk crews.
In the meantime, another six appliances were called out at 2.45pm to Cockfield where a combined harvester had caught fire and ignited crops.
At its height there were eight appliances on site including two, with a water carrier, from Norfolk.
