12 films you can watch in this beautiful Suffolk outdoor setting this summer
Love films? Looking for something for you and the kids to do together *outside*? Or how about a night out, holding hands under the Suffolk stars?
Look no further and make a date for the Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds between August 19 and 21.
In partnership with Pop Up Pictures, West Suffolk Council is bringing an Open Air Film Festival to Bury St Edmunds, with three days of movies and street food in the beautiful Abbey Gardens.
There will be 12 films over three days, from Thursday 19 – Saturday, August 21, with something for everyone, including family favourites, classics and spine-tingling horror flicks.
Perennial film picks include The Goonies, The Lost Boys, Pretty Woman, Top Gun, The Greatest Showman and Grease.
Families will love the Disney double of The Lion King and Jungle Book at the Kids’ Club on Friday, August 20, and the grown-ups will love that there’s two films for the price of one, and one child ticket free with every adult ticket!
Saturday, August 21, sees a Brunch Club double, with two films for the price of one - Mamma Mia and Dirty Dancing. No-one puts Baby in the corner - especially in the Abbey Gardens!
Prepare to be spooked with two nights of late-night horror movies for those feeling brave… Horrors in the Abbey Ruins features Shaun of The Dead on Friday night and A Nightmare on Elm Street on Saturday.
The Open Air Film Festival will also host a Street Food Market with a local flavour, featuring a variety of traders local to Bury St Edmunds and Suffolk. The street food market will be open throughout the event, to both cinema customers and the public. Or you can take along your own picnic.

Thursday, August 19
THE GOONIES (12): A group of young misfits called The Goonies discover an ancient map and set out on an adventure to find a legendary pirate's long-lost treasure (6.15pm).
THE LOST BOYS (15): After moving to a new town, two brothers discover that the area is a haven for vampires (8.45pm).
Friday, August 20
THE LION KING (PG): After the murder of his father, a young lion prince flees his kingdom only to learn the true meaning of responsibility and bravery (1pm).
THE JUNGLE BOOK (PG): After a threat from the tiger Shere Khan forces him to flee the jungle, a man-cub named Mowgli embarks on a journey of self-discovery with the help of panther Bagheera and free-spirited bear Baloo (3pm).
PRETTY WOMAN (15): A man in a legal but hurtful business needs an escort for some social events, and hires a beautiful prostitute he meets... only to fall in love (6pm).
TOP GUN (15): As students at the United States Navy's elite fighter weapons school compete to be best in the class, one daring young pilot learns a few things from a civilian instructor that are not taught in the classroom (8.45pm).
SHAUN OF THE DEAD (15): A man's uneventful life is disrupted by the zombie apocalypse (8.55pm).
Saturday, August 21
MAMMA MIA (PG): The story of a bride-to-be trying to find her real father told using hit songs by the popular 1970s group ABBA (1pm).
DIRTY DANCING (15): Finding the summer at a Catskills resort with her family, Frances "Baby" Houseman falls in love with the camp's dance instructor, Johnny Castle (3pm).
THE GREATEST SHOWMAN (PG): Celebrates the birth of show business and tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation (6pm)
GREASE (A): Good girl Sandy Olsson and greaser Danny Zuko fell in love over the summer. When they unexpectedly discover they're now in the same high school, will they be able to rekindle their romance? (8.40pm)
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (18): The monstrous spirit of a slain child murderer seeks revenge by invading the dreams of teenagers whose parents were responsible for his untimely death (8.55pm).
