Beccles Library in Blyburgate to relocate to former HSBC in New Market while building work takes place

A library is set to close for a week as it prepares to move into a temporary home while building work takes place.

Suffolk Libraries has announced that Beccles Library, in Blyburgate, will close from September 5.

It will remain closed for the entire week, before reopening in the former HSBC in New Market, next to Boots, on September 11.

The body said it will operate out of this building for at least eight weeks while building work is conducted at its current premises.

This will see the roof replaced, alongside all outside windows and doors in the main public library area.

A spokesman for Suffolk Libraries said it will try to offer ‘as full an experience as possible’, with books, computers and other library items available for use.

It will also continue to host events, with only table tennis being slashed during its move.

However, the spokesman noted other sessions were likely to be slightly shorter and require booking due to limited space.

The spokesman added: “Suffolk Libraries apologies for any inconvenience caused by the work but it is a necessary part of maintaining the building and will ultimately benefit all customers and the wider community.

“Any loans due back during the time the closure will be extended and no overdue fines will be issued. Customers can also use any other library in Suffolk, with Bungay and Halesworth being the closest.

“Suffolk Libraries’ extensive free eLibrary services are also available for eBooks, audiobooks, films, music and magazines.”
