90-year-old Beccles man completes Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle challenge for charity and is believed to be the oldest person to do so

A 90-year-old man has completed a near 1200 mile cycle journey for the fourth time, and he is believed to be the oldest person to do so.

Peter Langford, of Ringsfield, near Beccles, completed the gruelling challenge of cycling from Land’s End to John O’ Groats last Friday, after a months worth of cycling.

He had previously undertaken the feat at the ages of 75, 80 and 85, fundraising for homeless charities each time.

So far this year he has raised over £35,000 for Access Community Trust and The Salvation Army.

Maggi Evans, Peter’s daughter speaking on behalf of him, said: “He enjoys a challenge and having a goal to work towards, personally and for others, and raising money for charity has been a big motivator.

“He has always prayed for people experiencing homelessness and goes out of his way to find their story.

“He has been incredibly touched by people’s generosity, and he would like to thank them for helping each of the charities and invite those who have some spare money and are fortunate enough to have a home, to help those who are not as fortunate.”

Having taken these challenges over the past 15 years, and with this year’s fundraising total over £35,000, Peter has raised over £90,000 for charity over the course of his four rides.

Peter moved to Ringsfield in 1971 and founded a charity with his late wife, the Ringsfield Hall Trust, which is still going to this day.

Peter loves to cycle because it ‘makes him feel young,’ with Maggi saying: “When he’s walking, he notices his age because of his arthritic knees, but on a bike he’s pain free and mobile.

“He often enjoys the contemplation of cycling through the countryside, but a true blessing of this ride has been the companionship of family, friends and well wishers who have joined him on the way.”

Peter was accompanied during the challenge, with Maggi cycling alongside him as well as his granddaughter, Lily, and her husband, Andrew.

And as for whether 95 will see another push for John O’ Groats, Maggi said: “He says he won’t do it again, but his son and daughter have reminded him that he said that five years ago!”
